On Movies

So, my wonderful librarian friend, the Notorious L.A.V. has made this year to watch 1,000 great movies.  I had asked her for recommendations and she responded by asking me what my favorite movies were.

That's a bit tricky.  There are my favorite movies and then there are the movies that make some sort of impression on me.

So, deep breathe.  I will try to list the movies that are either my favorites or have made some sort of impact on me.

  1. Poltergeist - Not a favorite.  Never will be a favorite.  But most certainly, a movie that has made a lasting impression on me.  Snow on the tv screen makes me itchy.
  2. The Princess Bride - Must I explain this one?
  3. Clerks - Made an impression on me.  I was in my teens when I saw this.  Kevin Smith at his most interesting...at least to me.
  4. Tie Me Up!  Tie Me Down!  - *blushes*  Look, again, I was probably sixteen.  My best friend A. and I were watching movies that we were not allowed to watch.  And let me just say...it probably influenced me in...other aspects.
  5. All About My Mother - Heartbreaking....but so well acted.
  6. X-Men:  First Class - Crushes?  Check.  The story and acting were awesome.
  7. Inception - Wow.  Just...wow.
  8. Happy Accidents - I love this movie.  Is he crazy or really a time traveler?
  9. The Pillow Book  - Um...yeah.  Ewan McGregor.
  10. Star Trek - Great reboot.
  11. Star Wars - Always and forever.
  12. The 40-Year-Old Virgin  - Yes, I know, it's raunchy, but come on!  It's funny.
  13. The Lord of the Rings Triology - Again.  Always and forever
  14. Thor - Did I mention my love for Marvel and my geekiness?
  15. CSA:  The Confederate States of Amercia - I don't like this movie...but it did bring a different perspective on things.
  16. Breakfast at Tiffany's  - Audrey Hepburn.  I do believe Truman Capote hated the film.  I don't blame him.  However, I do still love both the novella and the movie.
  17. How to Marry a Millionaire  - Marilyn Monroe, Betty Grable and Lauren Bacall.  Another movie that my other best friend and I watched together.
  18. How to Steal a Million - Again with the Audrey.  This time teamed up with Peter O'Toole.  How could someone have such blue eyes?
  19. The Sound of Music - As much as I tell Loki about my dislike for musicals this and the next movie will always have soft spots for me.
  20. Mary Poppins  - Well, really, a spoonful of sugar does help make the medicine go down.
  21. Trainspotting - Ewan again.
  22. Fight Club - Trippy.
  23. Moulin Rouge
  24. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
  25. The Iron Giant
  26. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy - Not everyone's cup of tea, but I found myself thinking about this movie several days and weeks after I saw it.  I'm also referring to the remake not the original.
  27. Airplane!
  28. Memento
  29. Dead Again
  30. To Die For
  31. Dellamorte Dellamore - A very interesting movie.  Italian but with Rupert Everett in it.  I watched it mid to late 90's in State College while visiting a friend.
  32. Don't Tempt Me - Spanish.  Victoria Abril (also in Tie Me Up!  Tie Me Down!) and Peneolope Cruz.  And really, who doesn't want to watch agents of good and evil fight over a man's soul?
  33. Rushmore
  34. Vicky Cristina Barcelona - Truly, one of two Woody Allen movies that stuck in my mind.  The other one, Melinda and Melinda also had that effect.
  35. The Spanish Prisoner
  36. Howl's Moving Castle
  37. Time Bandits
  38. Ginger Snaps
  39. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
  40. Innerspace
  41. Sherlock Holmes
  42. French Kiss
  43. Heavenly Creatures
  44. Four Weddings and a Funeral
  45. Raising Arizona
  46. Sabrina
  47. Wings of Desire
  48. Dogma
  49. The Untouchables
  50. Ferris Bueller's Day Off
  51. Reservoir Dogs
  52. Chinatown
I think fifty-two ought to help her out, don't you think?  I could put reasons why these movies are my favorites or why they made such an impression...
