Before the Internet?

Stacy had a great post the other day about the time before the Internet.

The three questions in her meme were:

Do you remember time before the internet?
websites, memes, blogs, message boards?
When did you first ‘log on’?

I'm pretty damn sure I've written about my time pre-Internet and more importantly pre-email. Remember, it's where I first "met" Alpha. I suppose nowadays it's not so unheard of to meet someone over the internet and have a relationship. But back in 1992-1994 with a relatively fresh Paperback Writer was just a teen? Well, that's unheard of. And what's more I kept whatever I had with Alpha a secret from most everyone. I suppose looking back on things I met a lot of people via message boards that had less-than-good intentions. But that's in the past.

Yes, I do remember a time before the internet. I call that time my childhood. Yes, I am being a little cheeky, but it's true. Our first computer, other than the Atari my parents bought and got addicted to Pac-Man was a Tandy 1000. Yes, a Tandy 1000. Do you remember those relics? Prompts, black screens, green texts and dot matrix printers. Yeah, those Tandy 1000. I loved my computer though.

I remember the first time we hooked our modem up. We thought we could talk to other people using the modem. No, I mean really talk to each other...not just IM each other. *sigh* My poor friend, S, got really confused when I tried to talk to her that way! :) It was about a month later that I realized that I go log on and suddenly this whole world exploded in front of me...complete with people who were just as confused as I was about what we had at our fingertips.

I was a Prodigy girl, myself. Do y'all remember Prodigy? With those 30 free messages a month? Thirty free messages a month!?!?!? That's five minutes worth of emails to some people. Every email after cost you five cents.

I emailed J____ one day and found that I could "speak" more freely to him via email than I could in real life. And we lived ten minutes away from each other! J_____ is another story and I'm pretty sure I've written about him before. I don't know when...hmmm...perhaps, I should give him a nickname like I gave Alpha. I call him Windy. Why Windy? Well, allow me to wander a bit...

When we were in the eighth grade we went on a four day field trip. It doesn't matter where, the where isn't important. But at the end of one day, my best friend and I were sitting outside and Windy came up and asked us if we wanted a drink. We said yes and my best friend yelled at him to "Run like the wind," because we were thirsty. Poor Windy. He immediately trips in front us.

So, yes, I definitely remember a time before the Internet. I have twenty journals filled with my time before the Internet!

I started on the internet in Sept 1999, when e mails were going.

The first time I got on the internet was in 1991 back before most people knew about it. I was quite bored with it. I didn't start blogging until 2005...

Right now I am using the internet to play scrabble which I used to do with tiles and a board back in the olden days!!

i remember using a typewriter and carbon paper to write papers and i remember going to the library to look stuff up in books instead of "googling" everything.

I think I was about 25 when I discovered the internet, my former supervisor had AOL. Wow. Those were the days.
